YouTube Thumbnail Preview

See your thumbnail on YouTube before you publish.

Why preview a thumbnail before publishing

To preview a YouTube thumbnail, choose your image and type the title. smallyt places it in realistic YouTube layouts — home feed, search results, mobile and the Up next sidebar — in light and dark mode, next to other videos. It also checks the 16:9 shape, the minimum width and the file size YouTube accepts.

Viewers decide in a split second, and they see your thumbnail much smaller than you designed it: about a thumb’s width in the mobile feed and roughly 170 pixels in the Up next sidebar. Text that looks bold in an editor can become a smudge. Seeing the image next to other videos shows how it will really be judged.

Check every layout. Titles wrap to two lines in the home feed, sit beside the image in search, and shrink in the sidebar. Switch to dark mode too — a thumbnail with a black border can disappear against it.

The checks follow YouTube’s rules: a 16:9 shape, at least 640 pixels wide (1280 or more stays sharp), and a file the YouTube app accepts — up to 2 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop. If one fails, the resizer fixes it in one step.

Habits that help: three or four large words at most, the face or object off-centre so the duration label doesn’t cover it, strong contrast, and a thumbnail that tells the same story as the title without repeating it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. The file is opened by your browser and stays on your device. Closing the tab clears it.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 3840×2160 pixels at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG. The file must be under 2 MB when uploaded from the mobile app and under 50 MB on desktop. A 1280×720 JPG works everywhere.

Does the preview match YouTube exactly?

It follows YouTube’s current proportions and spacing closely. YouTube changes its design often, so treat it as a realistic guide rather than a pixel copy.

Can I compare several versions?

Yes. Add up to three images and they appear side by side in every layout.
